Local Youth Beekeeper Going to Haiti

Mel Saeger, treasurer of the Dodge-Jefferson Co. Beekeepers presented Katrina Pokorny with a donation for her trip to Haiti to teach beekeeping and making products from the hive.

The Dodge-Jefferson County Beekeepers Association recently donated funds to club member Katrina Pokorny as she prepares to travel to Haiti to teach beekeeping. Pokorny, age 16, will be traveling to Haiti from August 21-26, 2017. She will be taking supplies to Haiti to teach the Haitian women how to make bees wax products with the goal of helping them create a sustainable business that can help provide income to care for their families. Pokorny is the daughter of Doyle and Kim Pokorny of Waupun, and a member of the Dodge-Jefferson County Beekeepers and the WI Honey Producers Association.  Katrina is fundraising to be able to take some supplies, with the goal of leaving the supplies in Haiti. Katrina states, “I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.”  Her mom, Kim Pokorny will also be teaching basic beekeeping while there.

Haiti is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere.
